In spring of 2010, the men and women of the Garner Police Department were asked to establish a Department Mission Statement and a set of Department Values that represented who we are as an agency and what we are trying to accomplish in collaboration with the Garner community. A committee of employees volunteered and were tasked with speaking to each member of the agency to get their input as to what the Department Mission Statement and the Department Values should include. The committee took that input and framed it in a manner that now allows each of us to consider the actions we take and the decisions we make and ask ourselves if they are in support of our stated Mission and if they meet with our Values.

The Mission Statement of the Garner Police Department reads as follows:

The Garner Police Department is dedicated to excellent police service through partnerships that reduce crime, create a safe environment, build trust, and enhance the quality of life in our community. We are committed to delivering quality service in an effective, responsive, and professional manner.

Our Values include:

  • Commitment:
  • We have a selfless determination and relentless dedication to the public, our partners, and to each other. We will strive to continually improve our community and our agency.

  • Integrity:
  • We are committed to the highest standards of honesty and ethical conduct, which are the cornerstones of our profession.

  • Professionalism:
  • We accept responsibility for our actions. We are accountable to ourselves and those we serve. We will communicate honestly and consistently strive for excellence.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police has developed the following Oath of Honor that is designed to allow law enforcement officers worldwide to commit their professional lives to exemplary public service.

On my honor,
I will never betray my badge,
my integrity, my character,
or the public trust.
I will always have the courage
to hold myself and others
accountable for our actions.
I will always uphold the constitution
my community
and the agency I serve.

Every Garner Police Officer takes and adheres to the Law Enforcement Oath of Honor. An oath is a solemn pledge that each of our sworn personnel makes demonstrating that he or she intends to do what they say they will do in the performance of their duties. The Oath of Honor is a critical part of who we are as well as the promise we make to the community we serve.

Honor means that one's word is given as a guarantee.
Betray is defined as breaking faith with the public trust.
Badge is the symbol of our office.
Integrity is being the same person in both private and public life.
Character means the qualities that distinguish an individual.
Public trust is a charge of duty imposed in faith toward those we serve.
Courage is having the strength to withstand unethical pressure, fear or danger.
Accountability means that we are answerable and responsible to our oath of office.
Community is the jurisdiction and citizens we serve.
