Meadowbrook Graphic for Web
Photo Description: The above image shows a graphic rendering of the future Meadowbrook Park from the Master Plan completed by McAdams in May 2021.

Project Scope: Meadowbrook Park was purchased by the Town of Garner in 2016. The property is approximately 3.5 miles from Garner’s town center, off White Oak Road and abutting Interstate 40 on its eastern boundary. Formerly the Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club, the site is listed on the National Register of Historic Properties for its significance as the first African American Golf and Country Club in North Carolina. The Master Plan for the park was completed in 2021 with the goal of preserving the historic site while transforming it into a public passive park that meets the recreational needs of our growing community.

After a further site assessment conducted in April 2023, the existing earthen dam was deemed hazardous and a plan to breach the dam was developed and completed. The final phase of this park is currently scheduled for funding in the CIP for FY29. For more information on Parks Capital Project funding, visit the Budget Portal.

Current Status (updated October 2024): Phase 1A is complete. That phase consisted of safely relocating fish, de-watering the pond, breaching the earthen dam and constructing a channel lined with stone and riprap. That will be the interim condition during a mandatory six-month drying period and design of the next phases.

Phase 1B will consist of a pond amenity that will be designed after the six-month drying period required to delineate natural wet streams. In Spring 2024, the Town received $500,000 in federal funding to support the pond and stream restoration.
