Project goal: "Each February, for four days, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days we invite people to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them to us. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations." (birdcount.org)
How to Participate in the
Great Backyard Bird Count
February 17-20, 2023
- Look for birds for about 15 minutes (or longer). Count birds in your backyard, local park, or wherever you spot one. It doesn’t even have to be in Garner! You can participate just once or as many times as you want during the event (February 17-20).
- Track the species of birds and the number of each species. Use the “Merlin Bird ID” app to help identify what you see.
- Log the birds on eBird. You’ll need to make an account on the app or website.
Thank you for participating!
- (Optional) Go above and beyond to earn the NC Bird Count patch. Here’s how:
- Complete a minimum of 3 checklists (at least 15 minutes of birdwatching per checklist) and submit them to eBird. Check out this Quick Guide for information on how to submit your data to eBird.
- Claim your badge!
