How to Participate in the City Nature Challenge

April 29-May 2, 2022

 1. Find a place to observe wildlife. This can be in your backyard, local park, or wherever you find any wild-grown species. It doesn’t even have to be in Garner! You can participate just once or as many times as you want during the event.

 2. Take a photo (or multiple photos) of each species you find. Take the photos with the iNaturalist app or add them to iNaturalist later. You don’t need to know how to identify everything you see. The app or website will make suggestions for you.

 3. Submit the observations through the iNaturalist app or website. All photos must be taken between April 29-May 2, and must be uploaded by May 8 to count toward the NC Bioblitz and City Nature Challenge.

Thank you for participating!

 4. (Optional) Go above and beyond to earn the NC Bioblitz patch. Here’s how:

Two options:

NC Bioblitz

*If you have any additional questions visit the City Nature Challenge website: www.nccitynaturechallenge.com.  Or visit the Science Across NC website: www.scienceacrossnc.org.  Follow along with the iNaturalist  project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2022-triangle-area

For kids in grades K-8:

"Have kids who want to participate in the City Nature Challenge?  Children under 13 are not allowed to create and use their own iNaturalist accounts, but they can participate through the ecoEXPLORE program!  ecoEXPLORE engages children in grades K-8 in documenting biodiversity through a child-safe website.  Children can participate in this program year-round and earn points toward fun naturalist prizes, but they can earn a special bioblitz badge by participating during the City Nature Challenge.  Bioblitz badge and any other ecoEXPLORE observations made during the City Nature Challenge will be shared to iNaturalist after review by ecoEXPLORE staff!"
