The Town Council authorized a new Comprehensive Plan (including an update of the Town's Transportation Plan) as part of the Town’s 2015 Strategic Action Plan. The Town has hired the consulting firm Stantec to lead this process.

The new Comprehensive Plan will update and build upon the previous Comprehensive Growth Plan 2020 that was adopted in 2006. It will provide a framework for making land development and zoning decisions, promoting orderly land use, implementing public improvements, and generating private investment. In addition, the plan will outline the vision of what the residents of Garner want their community to be in the future and provide a detailed strategy to achieve that vision. The new plan will provide a long-range vision for development to guide the Town’s growth for the next 10 to 15 years.

Meanwhile, the new Transportation Plan component will examine existing conditions and provide specific strategies and recommendations for all modes of travel including roadways, public transportation, walking and cycling. It will provide long-range transportation recommendations for the next 10 to 15 years.
